What is Radiographic Testing (RT)?

LMIC Radiation Vault Kit Solutions

At Matter Fabs, we provide safety solutions for nondestructive testing (NDT) using radiographic testing (RT) for a variety of industries. NDT using RT is the process of inspecting and evaluating components like casting, welds, and vessels for any problems or differences in design intent characteristics without destroying the part. The components’ entire material can be inspected and after testing the component can still be used. RT uses either x-rays or gamma rays to view the internal structure of a component looking for any flaws.

There are many manufacturers that make RT systems in many different power outputs. The are many different radiation machines with different output strengths. A machine is selected based on the size and type of components being inspected.

History of Radiographic Testing

RT has been used for many years going back to 1895 when x-rays were discovered. X-rays and gamma rays were put to use very early, before the dangers of ionizing radiation exposure were discovered. Radiation shielded vaults were then created to block the radiation exposure.

Benefits of Radiographic Testing

Radiographic testing is proven to have several advantages:

  • It can be used on many different materials.
  • It’s a highly reproducible inspection.
  • The data gathered can be stored for later analysis.
  • Some RT systems are portable, allowing for use in the field in various locations and positions.

RT is an effective tool that requires very little set-up and preparation to start inspecting. Conventional RT systems use film display radiographic images but digital RT uses a digital detector to display images allowing for quicker exposure at much higher quality image. There is also computed, direct, real-time and tomography RT systems that all have unique uses and features.
