COST-EFFECTIVE & TURNKEY RADIATION SHIELDING ROOMS
Changing the Radiation Shielding Industry with Our Innovative, Patent-Pending MatterVault™
The radiation shielding market needed an effective and lower-cost alternative to traditional radiation shielding rooms. Our answer is the MatterVault, a cost-effective, eco-friendly radiation vault kit you can construct anywhere. We developed this turnkey radiation shielding solution to meet the needs of medical, veterinary, and industrial users working in remote and underserved areas of the world.
The round design makes for strong sidewalls, while the corrugated metal creates a much lighter structure than traditional concrete radiation vaults. A flexible design allows you to design the radiation vault kit to kit your equipment, shielding needs, and environment.
The MatterVault radiation vault kit provides numerous benefits:
- More affordable than traditional radiation shielding room construction
- A much faster build time
- A smaller ecological footprint
- The same safety features of a traditional radiation room
- Temporary and permanent designs
- Expandable to accommodate radiation equipment with higher energy levels
- Reduced material costs and freight costs to site
- Flexible design to meet all needs, from hospitals and veterinary clinics to nondestructive testing facilities
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE KIT
Wondering about the time frame? With Matter Fabs’ specialized radiation vault kits, you can build a small room in just days. Larger rooms take a bit longer but can still be constructed in a fraction of the time it takes to build a traditional radiation shielding room. We can ship anywhere and source our shielding materials locally to help you save on shipping.
Each turnkey radiation vault kit includes:
DESIGN
Our team works with you to design for your specific needs.
FABRICATION
Your kit is constructed before disassembling and packaging for shipping.

Helping the World
In the beginning, the primary goal of Daniel Shields and the Matter Fabs engineering team was to develop a cost-effective radiation shielding room for low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). We successfully developed a radiation therapy (RT) solution we call the MatterVault LMIC Vault Kit. Our vault kit provides everything needed to construct one or many radiation shielding vaults using shielding media like sand or concrete. The kits have all the parts, hardware, tools and step-by-step instructions needed to assemble the structure on any new or existing foundation. We size each kit based on the radiation levels used, and our physicist will work with local governments to ensure the RT is shielded properly. Matter Fabs works with LMIC that have the staff and RT machine but need a low-cost radiation shielding solution.

The Burden of Cancer
Recent estimates from the World Health Organization predict that the global incidence of cancer will increase by 65% to more than 22 million by 2030, becoming a major public health problem in all regions of the world. Differences in cancer incidence and mortality rates have been noted in different regions of the world, with the highest rates occurring in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). Each year, 5 million people die from cancer (10 percent of the 50 million deaths) in LMIC, which is second only to deaths from infectious diseases.
A Silent Crisis
A silent crisis in cancer treatment exists in developing countries and is intensifying every year,” says Mohamed ElBaradei, IAEA Director General. At least 60 percent of people with cancer in the developing world can benefit from radiotherapy that destroys cancerous tumors. Sadly, most developing countries do not have enough radiation therapy facilities to save lives.
Who Needs Help?
Some 15 African nations and several countries in Asia lack even one radiation therapy machine. Ethiopia, which has 60 million people, possesses just one such machine, provided by the IAEA. Other developing countries have very low ratios of machines per population, often one machine for several million people. Over the next decade, the IAEA estimates that at least $2.5 billion is needed over the next decade to provide adequate treatment facilities in the developing world and train the physicians and physicists to ensure safe and effective treatment.
LLRW (low level radiation waste) & HLRW (high level radiation waste) is a general term for a wide range of items that have become contaminated with radioactive material or have become radioactive through exposure to radiation. Hospitals, medical institutions, industrial, aerospace, educational, research, private or government laboratories and nuclear fuel facilities all generate LLRW & HLRW as part of their daily use of radioactive materials. LLRW is typically stored onsite by licensees, either until it has decayed away and can be disposed of as ordinary trash or transported to a larger disposal site.
This LLRW & HLRW accumulates in large quantities and having a safe containment facility on site for these materials becomes a big issue worldwide. Our engineers here at MatterFabs utilize our MatterVault system to solve this problem. The MatterVault can be constructed quickly next to any facility and provides the proper shielding in the walls to contain a large quantity of LLRW & HLRW safely and very cost effectively. The MatterVault is also a great solution for a temporary facility for large scale short term use and can removed and reused in a different location. The MatterVault can safely contain LLRW and HLRW at any location for a short term or long term storage solution for up to 50+ years.
