MatterVault LMIC Vault Kit

Cost-effective, Eco-friendly Solution

Radiation Therapy Shielding Room DIY
Matter Fabs is changing how people think of radiation shielding vaults with it’s innovative, patent-pending MatterVault™

We recognized the need in our market for an effective and lower cost radiation shield. MatterVault is a cost-effective, eco-friendly option for radiation shielding. The round design makes for strong sidewalls, while the corrugated metal is much lighter than traditional concrete radiation vaults. The benefits are numerous:

  • A much faster build time
  • A smaller ecological footprint
  • The same safety features of a traditional radiation room
  • Temporary and permanent designs
  • Turnkey options
  • A product that is expandable to higher energy levels
  • Reduced material costs and freight costs to site

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE KIT

Wondering about the time frame? Matter Fabs systems can be built in days for a small room, while larger rooms take a bit longer. Dense material creating the shielding will be sourced locally so you are saving the cost of shipping. Here’s what is included:

The Burden of Cancer

Recent estimates from the World Health Organization predict that the global incidence of cancer will increase by 65% to more than 22 million by 2030, becoming a major public health problem in all regions of the world. Differences in cancer incidence and mortality rates have been noted in different regions of the world, with the highest rates occurring in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). Each year, 5 million people die from cancer (10 percent of the 50 million deaths) in LMIC, which is second only to deaths from infectious diseases.

A Silent Crisis

A silent crisis in cancer treatment exists in developing countries and is intensifying every year,” says Mohamed ElBaradei, IAEA Director General. At least 60 percent of cancer victims in the developing world can benefit from radiotherapy that destroys cancerous tumors, but most developing countries do not have enough radiation therapy facilities to save lives.

Who Needs Help?

Some 15 African nations and several countries in Asia lack even one radiation therapy machine. Ethiopia, which has 60 million people, possesses just one such machine, provided by the IAEA. Other developing countries have very low ratios of machines per population, often one machine for several million people. Over the next decade, the IAEA estimates that at least $2.5 billion is needed to provide adequate treatment facilities in the developing world, half to purchase facilities and half to train the physicians and physicists required to ensure safe and effective treatment.

LLRW (low level radiation waste) & HLRW (high level radiation waste) is a general term for a wide range of items that have become contaminated with radioactive material or have become radioactive through exposure to radiation. Hospitals, medical institutions, industrial, aerospace, educational, research, private or government laboratories and nuclear fuel facilities all generate LLRW & HLRW as part of their daily use of radioactive materials. LLRW is typically stored onsite by licensees, either until it has decayed away and can be disposed of as ordinary trash or transported to a larger disposal site.

This LLRW & HLRW accumulates in large quantities and having a safe containment facility on site for these materials becomes a big issue worldwide. Our engineers here at MatterFabs utilize our MatterVault system to solve this problem. The MatterVault can be constructed quickly next to any facility and provides the proper shielding in the walls to contain a large quantity of LLRW & HLRW safely and very cost effectively. The MatterVault is also a great solution for a temporary facility for large scale short term use and can removed and reused in a different location. The MatterVault can safely contain LLRW and HLRW at any location for a short term or long term storage solution for up to 50+ years. Countries Matter Fabs & IAEA Are Looking To Help

Africa: the IAEA is working with 22 countries: Egypt, Tunisia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Algeria, Libya, Morocco, South Africa, Gabon, Senegal, Cameroon, Madagascar and Mauritius, Ghana, Ethiopia, Namibia, Uganda, Nigeria, Sudan, Angola, Yemen and Zambia.
Europe: the IAEA is working with 27 countries: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, and Ukraine.
Asia: the IAEA is working with 17 countries: China, Singapore, Philippine, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, India, Japan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Myanmar.

In the beginning, the primary goal for Daniel Shields and the engineering team at Matter Fabs, was to develop a very cost effective RT (Radiation Therapy) Shielding facility that could be used in low-and middleincome countries (LMIC). We are happy to say we were successful in developing a solution we call the MatterVault LMIC Vault Kit. Our new vault kit will provide everything needed to construct one or many RT vaults ready to have shielding media added like sand or concrete. The kits will have all the parts, hardware, tools and easy to follow step by step instructions to assemble the structure on any new or existing foundation. Our kits are sized based on radiation levels used and our physicist will work with local governments to make sure the RT being used is shielded properly. Matter Fabs works with LMIC that have the staff and RT machine but need a low cost RT shielded room.
